Varsity Project, Morley

Chances are you already know Varsity – they have six locations spanning Fremantle to Joondalup and are a staple for good burgers in Perth. Varsity Project in Morley truly lives up to the “Project” name deviating from the standard sports bar interior boasted by the other locations. Previously a car garage, the location has a more “industrial” vibe with exposed brick and high ceilings.

Upon arrival make your grand entrance through the shipping container and into the spacious warehouse. You will be greeted by retro arcade machines to your right, and pool and ping pong tables to your left. Ahead you will see the bar and a sea of tables surrounded by a myriad of screens of many sizes showcasing all kinds of sport broadcasts. There is no need to worry about picking a bad seat and leaving with a sore neck.

The atmosphere is relaxed and casual, as afterall, it is a sports bar. Depending on how busy it is it can get a little noisy. The acoustics are great however and it will never affect conversation nor the event on the main screens. Order food and drink at the bar before sitting down. The line moves quickly regardless of how busy in our experience and service is prompt and friendly

Varsity Project food

In our search for the best burgers in Perth we have often found ourselves back at Varsity. I would be reluctant to call them the best however they are certainly near the top of the list. The best thing is that they are consistent. I cannot remember a time we have been disappointed by the food here.

There is a wide range of options for both beef and chicken burgers along with vegetarian, gluten-free and vegan options for those so inclined. If you’re not feeling a burger they also offer pizzas (we can’t comment, haven’t tried) and salads (…why are you at Varsity?). There are ample sides for when you might need an entree with some drinks when spending the day to watch an event such as chicken wings and tenders and loaded fries. Best to go more than once and try as many things as you can.

After your meal you might feel some dessert or drinks. They do offer some desserts however the most common seems to be the notorious pyrex jug milkshakes (boozy if you’re feeling cheeky). If you’re more in the mood for straight drinks rather than a boozy milkshake you might be inclined to indulge in the cocktail menu which has some great picks like the Dr Varsity and the Lychee Appletini.

Our picks

  • The Texan with a pint of Varsity lager. In our opinion all of the burgers taste better if you have a pint of beer beforehand.
